HOMEMADE MATTERS FOR SAVING DOLLARS!!!

Our last post discussed the many health reasons we should all be focusing on making as much of our meals and foods we eat from scratch.  Today I would like to discuss a real important issue for preparing homemade foods from scratch at home, as oppose to buying processed pre-packaged foods or even just eating out.  That is SAVING MONEY!!!

Has anyone else noticed the rapidly rising price of food lately?  Everytime we go shopping the grocery bill is higher than the month before.  Why pay $4 for a container of organic chicken broth when you've got the carcasses from last night’s dinner that you can simmer down to make fresh stock? Why get gouged $6 for a small bag of granola when you can get the raw oats for $1 and make your own with the kids after school?

Even eating out has gone up in price dramtically too!  Dollar menus claim to be cheap, but what you may not realize is how much you could be saving by simply replacing one fast food meal a week with one made at home. Not only will it save you money, but these homemade alternatives are lower in calories and higher in nutrients. A fast food meal costs around $5 to $7, but the cost of a homemade meal ends up being around at home ends up being $1 to $3 per person. This ends up being a tremendous 40 to 79 percent savings per person. These savings are not limited to dining out, but can expand to the grocery store too. On average, a decent loaf of bread totals just over $5. However, one loaf of bread made from scratch at home is only $2. Magnify that savings to your other bread products, such as dinner rolls or buns, and you could save hundreds of dollars a month. With thanks to our parent site Boschkitchencenters, we have the following information to past on.

Homemade Substitutes for Grocery Staples: Important Factors to Remember

Here is just a sample of the ways you can save making homemade products--

  • Always purchase foods while in season. This is the best way to save money. Example: Dry fruit leather from the softer fruits that no one else will use or stock the pantry with canned tomatoes in August when they are practically giving them away.

  • Buy in bulk when possible.  You of coarse get the advantage or a reduced unit price. Go in on big purchases with a friend, if needed.  A great example is our Wholesale food order that has just started.

  • Be realistic amount of time to make your homemade grocery staples and set that Jumbo Thompson Raisinstime aside. It is going to take some extra time to make things by hand but having some good appliances like a Bosch Kitchen machine will help a great deal to speed up the effort.  Remember that you will get faster as you gain experience. Team up with a friend on major canning projects.

  • Start small. Choose small projects to start like making your own salad dressing or pancake syrup for example. Don’t attempt everything on the list below or you may become overwhelmed and give up.

  • Invest in some good equipment -  Using quality equipment to mill your own flour orNutrimill Classic Flour mill make your own bread, or produce your own dried foods etc. will pay for itself in the long term use of it through your lifetime.
